Flames Host Two Horizon League Matches

Conference Rivals Come to Town Friday and Saturday

The UIC men's tennis team will hit the courts at XS Tennis for two Horizon League matches this weekend. Wright State will visit Friday afternoon, and Northern Kentucky will be in town Saturday.

Service
  • In the team's lone Horizon League match to date, Marcelo Dib and Niko Wasilewicz had the best showing on the #1 doubles court.
  • The pair led their set 5-1 when it was called due to Detroit Mercy having clinched the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3.
  • Wasilewicz was just a few points away from a singles win, as he lost two sets in tiebreakers by 7-6 and 7-5 margins.
  • Johan Hedstrom played well at #2 singles, going to a third set tiebreaker which he lost 10-8.
Return
  • Hedstrom leads the squad with four singles wins. Three of them have come in the #2 flight, which is the most of any Flame in a single flight.
  • Every Flame with more than one singles match played has at least one victory.
  • Dib and Wasilewicz have the most doubles wins with four. Hedstrom and William Wale are right behind them with three.
Winner
  • The Flames are seeking their first conference win of the season. They have not won a Horizon League match since April 16, 2016.
  • Northern Kentucky was tied for seventh place with UIC in the Horizon League preseason poll. Wright State was one spot ahead of them in sixth.
  • Both of this weekend's foes defeated the Flames last year, but UIC was victorious in each of the respective previous meetings.
Last Time Out
  • The Flames fell to Western Michigan, 7-0, in the final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday.
  • Marco Nanni and Kailash Panchapakesan won the #3 doubles set, 7-5.
  • None of the Flames' singles players managed to win a set against the Broncos.
Scouting Wright State
  • Wright State got wins over Northern Kentucky and St. Bonaventure last weekend.
  • The Raiders lost only one match in their two victories, and that came after a 25-23 tiebreaker.
  • Param Pun has the most singles wins, 12, on the team. He is 9-1 in the #3 flight and 3-1 at #2.
  • Michal Kianicka and Fernando Nardelli have had by far the most success of any Raider doubles team, going 9-3 this season at #1.
Scouting Northern Kentucky
  • The Norse's loss to Wright State on Saturday was their fifth straight loss. They are winless against Division I competition this season.
  • Nick Elleman and Andrew Niehaus have each won their most recent singles match.
  • The Norse have paired at least four different teams in each doubles flight. Only two teams have played as many as three matches together.
