Flames Challenge Two City Rivals This Weekend

Matches at DePaul and Northwestern to Renew Rivalries

A weekend filled with city rivalry matches awaits the UIC men's tennis team.  On Friday, the Flames will visit DePaul.  They'll follow that up with a match at Northwestern Sunday.  Live video of the Northwestern match will be provided via the link in the blue box.

Service
  • Marco Nanni is the current Horizon League Singles Player of the Week.  He won two matches last Saturday against Chicago State and Eastern Illinois.
  • Nanni dominated his Cougar opponent, 6-1, 6-0.  He closed out his Panther counterpart, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 and lost only two games in his four winning sets.
  • Johan Hedstrom and William Wale gave the Flames a sweep of the conference's weekly awards by taking the Doubles Team of the Week title.
  • The duo won both of their sets on Saturday, each of which clinched the doubles point for UIC after a 1-1 deadlock through the first two sets.
Return
  • Hedstrom leads the team with three singles wins on the season.
  • Nanni and Marcelo Dib have two wins each.  Since settling in at the #5 position, Nanni is 2-1.
  • Dib and Niko Wasilewicz, the team's #1 doubles pair, have four wins to their credit.
  • Since teaming up two weeks ago, Hedstrom and Wale have gone 3-1 together.
Winner
  • With a doubleheader sweep over Chicago State and Eastern Illinois on Saturday, UIC got its first two match wins of the season.
  • Following a shuffle of the singles and doubles lineups, the Flames have used the same lineup in each of the last three matches.
  • Wasilewicz has been the anchor at #1 singles all year, but the numbers two through five flights have been altered from the beginning of the season.
Last Time Out
  • With identical 6-1 wins over Chicago State and Eastern Illinois, the Flames swept a split doubleheader on Saturday.
  • Hedstrom and Wale were the only doubles team to win two sets.
  • Hedstrom, Dib, Nanni, and Wale each won both of their singles matches.
  • Wasilewicz and Kailash Panchapakesan each won one singles match, giving every Flame at least one victory on the day.
Scouting the Opposition
  • DePaul's Alex Galoustian was named Big East Athlete of the Week after a #1 singles win and a dramatic rally with Boris Spanjaard to clinch the doubles point and the 4-3 team win over Louisiana Lafayette.
  • The Blue Demons started the season 10-3 before dropping matches to New Mexico State and Troy, in addition to their win over Louisiana Lafayette, in the HEB Tournament of Champions last weekend.
  • Galoustian and Spanjaard have been consistent at #1 and #2 singles respectively, however Christopher Casati, Luuk Wassenaar, and Tamas Zador each have at least seven singles wins spread among several flights.
  • Northwestern is in the midst of playing eight matches at home in a nine match span.  Their lone road trip in that stretch was a 4-3 loss to Harvard on February 25.  The Wildcats went up 2-0 before Harvard rallied to win the match in the final singles contest.
  • Antonioni Fasano is the 110th ranked singles player by the ITA.  Ben Vandixhorn and Dominik Stary are the #50 doubles team.
  • At least two players have seen action in every singles flight this season.  Nick Brookes and Ben Vandixhorn have five wins each to lead the team.
  • A busy weekend at Combe Tennis Center will see NU host Illinois on Friday and Indiana on Sunday morning before the Flames hit the courts at 6 pm.
