In Dramatic Finish, Dayton Downs Flames

Flyers Complete Comeback With Three-Set Win

In a battle that came down to the last set in the last match, Dayton won the third set on the #5 singles court to escape XS Tennis with a 4-3 win over the Flames Saturday afternoon.  UIC led 3-2 and had two chances to get the win over the A-10 power, but could not close things out.  Pelle Strandberg and Johan Hedstrom earned singles wins for UIC.  Both of them played well, as head coach Hans Neufeld noted, before going on to express frustration at the team result.  "This was a tough loss," he said.  "We had our chances and we controlled the points but we didn't make our shots like we usually do."

Doubles Results
  • Hedstrom and Kasper Parlklo won their second straight doubles decision, a dominating 6-1 matchup on the #2 court.
  • Marcelo Dib, sidelined since the fall with an injury, made his season debut.  He paired with Kailash Panchapakesan at #3, and the duo had similar success with a 6-1 victory of their own.
  • Niko Wasilewicz and William Wale were in the lead and in a position to close out the #1 set when the Flames clinched the doubles point and they were pulled off the court.
Singles Results
  • Parlklo was in two close sets but ended up on the short end of each in a 7-5, 7-5 loss at #3.
  • Dayton took the lead after the #4 match, which was another very close one.  Panchapasekan narrowly lost by a 7-6, 7-5 count.
  • Hedstrom remained in the #1 flight and came through with his first win of the year, a 7-3, 7-6 (3) decision.
  • The Flames went back out in front and moved a win away from the team victory after Strandberg picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win at #6.
  • Wasilewicz was unable to break back into the win column, falling on the #2 court to turn the final match into a winner-take-all showdown.
  • The #5 match had plenty of drama.  Anthony Nguyen played strong in the first set before giving up a comeback in the second.  He just couldn't get a necessary break in the third, and the Flyers took the match, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, and the team win.
Up Next
  • The Flames will begin Horizon League play in their next appearance.
  • A road trip to Northern Kentucky on March 30, and to Wright State March 31, will test the team.
