More hardware came UIC's way during individual award presentations at USAG Nationals on Sunday.

The ceremony included the formal presentations of awards that were announced at the banquet before the national championships began, as well as individual All-American honors based on results from the team semifinals.  The team won three major postseason honors, in addition to having five Flames place on a total of 10 All-American teams.

Mikailla Northern received the Mari-Rae Sopper award.  The prestigious honor is given to the gymnast who exhibits Sopper's passion, dedication, and devotion to gymnastics.  Northern also was awarded the Senior Gymnast of the Year, presented to the nation's outstanding senior gymnast.  Athletic ability and academic achievement, as well as dedication and devotion, are among the criteria for the award.  Co-head coaches Peter and Mary Jansson were named the national Coaches of the Year.

Northern was also named a first team All-American in the all-around.  She made the second team on bars and beam.  Her all-around score in the team semifinal was 39.125, good for fourth across both sessions combined.  She had the third best national qualifying score in the nation.  She had nine all-around scores over 39, including in the team finals, when she matched her high of 39.250.  In the entire USAG all season, only one gymnast had a score higher than that – teammate Kayla Baddeley.

Northern's vault of 9.800 in the semis established a new season high, which only lasted for one day until she scored 9.825 in the finals.  She scored 9.750 on beam in the semis.

Kayla Baddeley was a first team All-American on vault, beam, and all-around, and a second teamer on bars.  The awards came just before she won the national championship on vault with a score of 9.850.  It was her fifth score at least that high this season, and a quarter-tenth higher than her top seeded semifinal score.  Baddeley finished third in the nation on beam with an identical 9.850 that matched her career high.  She had the highest all-around total, 39.275, in the team finals.

Serena Baker and Toni Alicke each made the bars All-American first team.  Baker went on to take third place in the bars event final, and Alicke tied for sixth.  Baker excelled on bars all season, compiling the USAG's highest national qualifying score.  She achieved a high score of 9.875 four times.  Alicke soared to a 9.900 twice including in the team semifinals.

Alisa Sheremeta was the final Flames All-American, making first team on floor.  Perhaps the nation's top freshman on floor, she had an astonishing five 9.900s, including on back-to-back days in the team semifinals and finals.  Her event final score of 9.875 was good for second place.  She had three wins on floor and six second place finishes.

The Janssons led UIC to one of the best seasons in school history.  The Flames won the MIC conference championship for the record 13th time – all coming during the Janssons' tenure – and scored 195 points or more a school record 10 times.  No other Flames squad had more than five 195s.  The team topped 196 twice, including in the team finals when they became the national runner-up.  Their season average was 195.000 and their national qualifying score was 195.390 – both school records.
