CHICAGO – Rising senior
Jamie Ahale of the men's basketball team and rising sophomore
Brooke Beyer of the women's golf program were recently named All-Americans by the National Strength And Conditioning Association.
Â
The All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year Award program recognizes those collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning.
Â
Ahale was one of three Flames to appear in all 35 contests a season ago, averaging 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, helping lead the Flames to an appearance in the Horizon League Basketball Championship title game. The native of Montrose, Australia, had a career day against San Diego in nonconference play, finishing with a career-high 23 points while going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line to set a new career best in free throws made. The guard followed with 19 points against Purdue Fort Wayne in the Flames' next contest thanks to 6-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc, new career highs in field goals and 3-point field goals made.
Â
"Jamie has displayed exemplary effort on and off the court over the past year," said assistant strength and conditioning coach
Gabe Derman. "He is attentive, coachable, hard-working, and a terrific teammate. In the weight room he has shown a consistent drive to get better and a determination to improve himself physically. His commitment to excellence carries to all other aspects of his life."
Â
Beyer was immediately inserted into the lineup as a true freshman, competing in all six events for the Flames before the remainder of their spring season was cut short. The Mesa, Arizona native had a stellar weekend at the Flames' lone match play event, the Motor City Cup. Over the course of three match play rounds, Beyer posted a 2-0-1 record, including a 3&2 win over Kylie Lysack of Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky in UIC's second match of the tournament before capping competition with a dominating 6&5 win over Morgan Brown of Chicago rival Loyola.
Â
"Since stepping on campus, Brooke has shown a strong commitment and buy-in to the strength and conditioning program," added Derman. "She leads by example with her attention to detail, positive attitude and willingness to push herself. This approach will serve her well as she continues to chase excellence in the weight room, in the classroom and on the course."
