UIC's swimming and diving team celebrated a successful season and honored its top individual performers at the team's annual postseason banquet.
Record Breaker awards were given to
Cydney Liebenberg and
Poleena Kovalaske. Liebenberg broke her own school record in 3-meter diving with a score of 342.45 against Cleveland State February 27. Kovalaske swam the 50 free in 23.18 seconds at the Horizon League Championships. She broke Monica Pinkus' eight-year-old school record by a third of a second.
Liebenberg and Felix LaFortune were recognized for achieving NCAA B-cut scores. Both of them qualified for the NCAA Zone C meet in 1- and 3-meter diving. The pair advanced to the final round of competition in both events.
Jan Komorowski was named the men's swimming MVP. The freshman won every race he swam during the regular season, picking up wins across the 100, 200, 500, and 1000 yard freestyle events. He was also a member of the freestyle relay team at every meet. At the conference championships, Komorowski took third in the 200 free, fifth in the 1650, sixth in the 500, and was on two third-place free relay teams.
Owen Zant took the men's most improved award. Zant had two top-three finishes in his first meet against Cleveland State, and was in the top two in the 200 back in every meet, including a win in the event against Milwaukee. He swam the 100 and 200 back at the conference meet, qualifying for the B-final in each. Zant set career-best times in both backstroke races to close out his sophomore season.
The women's swimming MVP award went to
Lilly Culp. She won the 100 and 200 fly in every dual meet she entered, and capped the season with her second straight 200 fly championship at the Horizon League Championships. She came in second in the 100 fly at conference, and also made the final heat in the 200 IM. She was part of the medley relay team that won two dual meets and came in second at conference in the 200 and 400 yard events.
Sam Malecki was named most improved on the women's side. She made significant strides throughout her freshman campaign, shaving over three seconds off her 200 breast time and a whopping seven and a half seconds off her 200 IM mark from the beginning of the season to the conference championships. At the Horizon League meet, Malecki made the B-final in all three of her individual events.
LaFortune was named the men's diving MVP. He won the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions in every dual meet, defended his 3-meter conference championship, and took third at conference on 1-meter.Â
Liebenberg was awarded the women's diving MVP honor. She also won the 1- and 3-meter events in every dual meet. She could not compete at conference, since the South African National Championships were taking place at the same time. Liebenberg won the gold medal in 1-meter, 3-meter, and synchro. She became UIC's first female diver to make NCAA Zone finals.
Ryan Murphy was the most improved male diver. He set a career high of 310.00 in 3-meter diving at the season opener, and came just a quarter of a point shy of that standard at conference, where he finished second.
The most improved women's diver was Abby Hellinga. She set a career high on the 1-meter board against Milwaukee, and posted a career best on the 3-meter board in the final round at conference, where she finished second.
Two scholarship awards were distributed, continuing a long-standing tradition of recognizing athletic and academic performance. The Sam Koostra award went to Abby Hellinga and Jeff Wiedoff. The Bill Mulliken award was presented to
Poleena Kovalaske and
Kyle Lewarchick.
Seven seniors who have exhausted their eligibility were honored for their contributions to the program.Â
Cannon Claiborne,
Jacob Cunningham,
Connor Mitsch,
Ryan Murphy,
Gabriele Sasia, Nikki Eyssen, and
Kallie Zuidema were all presented their senior plaque.
