CHICAGO (Sept. 18, 2024) – The UIC cheer and dance programs will be reimagined as a combined squad beginning with the 2024-25 academic year, interim director of intercollegiate athletics
Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley announced Wednesday. As part of this announcement,
Chelsea Lemon will take over as head coach of the unified program after coaching the UIC Dancing Flames last year.
Â
"Although a tough decision was made to merge our cheer team with dance, we're excited for a new vision, bright future, and outstanding performances following the quality leadership of Coach Lemon," Dr. Coumbe-Lilley said.
Â
"I am eager to spearhead this initiative while maintaining the traditions of both programs under one umbrella," Lemon noted. "We are leaning towards a more professional style and approach to collegiate dance while developing performers to be successful in their respective performance endeavors well beyond their college careers."
Â
The new UIC Dancing Flames will build upon the rich history and tradition of both UIC Dance and Cheer, promising a new and exciting professional blend of dance, sideline cheer and collaborative floor routines (replacing traditional stunt-based cheer routines that will no longer be offered at UIC). The new unified program provides countless opportunities for cheerleaders, gymnasts and gameday performers of all backgrounds, created through a commitment to technical and artistic excellence.
