Chicago, Ill.- After celebrating five conference championships and five NCAA postseason bids this past spring, the University of Illinois at Chicago received even more good news regarding the equally-impressive academic excellence of its student-athletes as the Horizon League announced on Wednesday that 28 Flames athletes made the league's 2004 Spring Academic Honor Roll.

The women's swimming and diving team led the way with six honorees, with Stephanie Donovan, Tara Goodwin, Christine Hare, Laura Martensen, Maria Ortiz and Holly Waidanz making the list.

Men's swimming and diving received four honorees, with Bill Hare, Matt Huffman, Joe Scharnak and LeRoy Stevens getting the call. Softball also placed four on the honor roll, led by Cameron Astiazaran, Joyce Cathey, Meghan Gallagher and Brittany McIntyre.

Soccer and men's tennis each placed three on the list, as Chris Pipis, Russ Pleskunas and Josh Robinson represented the soccer team while Yevgen Ryeznik, James Wonneberg and Pat Zufan made the honor roll as members of the men's tennis team.

Ryan Martin and Mike Bruszer represented the baseball team on the honor roll, while Mikhail Davidyan, Brian Roth and Sara O'Mara took home honor roll recognition as members of the cross country/track and field squads.

Richard Lesko (basketball), Meghan Keck (volleyball) and Catherine Roy (volleyball) rounded out the list for the Flames with their stellar performances in the classroom.

Candidates for the 2004 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll needed to meet three criteria to qualify. They must have: 1) participated in at least one of the league's 19 sports; 2) completed three semesters as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) earned a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 as of June 20, 2004.
