Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago athletic director James W. Schmidt announced Dr. Eric A. Gislason as the newest Faculty Athletic Representative.

Gislason replaces Edward Deam, who retired after 32 seasons, and joins Dr. Sylvia Furner as the UIC Faculty Athletic Representatives.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the student-athletes at UIC," Gislason said. "Sports have been a very important part of my collegiate career."

Gislason has been UIC's Vice Chancellor for Research since 2001 and a professor of Chemistry at UIC since 1977. He is a member of the American Association of University Professors, American Physical Society and American Chemical Society. He is currently a member of the American Chemical Society's Visiting Associate's Program.

"We are pleased that Dr. Gislason has decided to join the UIC Athletics staff as our newest Faculty Athletic Representative," Schmidt said. "He is highly respected on the UIC campus and embodies the leadership and foresight to help take UIC Athletics to greater heights.

"He will be highly involved with national and Horizon League issues."

Gislason, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi, has been nominated for several Silver Circle Teaching Awards and won the award in 1982.

He is also listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology, American Men and Women of Science, Who's Who in Technology, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest.

Gislason received his bachelors' degree in chemistry and graduated summa cum laude from Oberlin College in 1962, where he was also a four-year letter-winner in golf. He then earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics, from Harvard in 1967.
