Study hall is a great opportunity to help student-athletes:
1. Create productive and meaningful study habits
2. Know that there is a designated space for learning and to access resources
3. Ask questions from academic advisors and seek assistance with issues like time management or academic skill development
Study hall is not a place where we:
1. Waste time or socialize
2. Punish people who are not performing well academically
3. Promote a culture of perfectionism and induce anxiety
The Space
The Port Academic Center is a study space for student-athletes to utilize for both mandatory and voluntary study time. UIC student-athletes can take advantage of the quiet environment, with plenty of seating, desktop computers, and academic and printing supplies available for their utilization. The Port Academic Center has designated tutoring areas to facilitate a better 1:1 interaction, and a study/conference room for group sessions or multi-media needs.
Study Hall Procedures
Mandatory study hall is determined based on a number of criteria; a student-athlete’s academic performance, course load and rigor, year in school/transition status, etc… the student, athletic academic advisor and coach will discuss the proper plan for each student-athlete addressing the individual needs. Mandatory study hall can be facilitated through a prescribed number of hours or through objective-based study hall to meet the student-athlete’s learning style and productivity level.
1. All student-athletes check-in via the iAdvise Kiosk in the Port Academic Center
2. Study Hall status/time is monitored weekly: Mon-Sun
3. Sleeping and talking on the phone are strictly prohibited in the Port Academic Center
