Alex Mena is UIC's Associate Athletics Director - Compliance. He joined the Flames Family in February 2022 as the Associate Director, Compliance before being promoted to his current role in May 2023. Along with his work focusing on UIC's compliance with institutional, conference and NCAA regulations, Mena serves as the department's liaison with the campus housing unit and is the sport supervisor for the Flames' women's soccer and spirit programs.Â
Mena returned to Chicago after serving as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance at Southern Utah University since 2019. In addition to interpreting NCAA, Big Sky Conference and institutional rules and policies for the department's 15 athletics teams, Mena oversaw an athletic scholarship fund of $4.5 million.
Prior to working in compliance at Southern Utah, Mena was a Student-Athlete Academic Advisor at UTRGV for over two years, primarily assisting the men's and women's track and field and men's and women's tennis programs. Mena created a student-athlete handbook of policies and procedures at UTRGV, while also assisting the compliance office and university registrar with initial eligibility, admission process and eligibility certification.
Mena also has extensive experience in intercollegiate athletics at Drexel, Savannah State and College of Lake County. He also completed internships in strength and conditioning at both Penn and Southern.
In addition to his work in athletics, Mena is the founder and lead engineer of Graft Dynamics, a company utilizing 3D design software to develop new stage one prototypes.
A native of Mundelein, Ill., Mena received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 2012. He would go on to earn a Master of Science in Healthcare Management at the University of New Orleans in 2014.
