Flames Falter against Green Bay

UIC takes 66-37 loss

CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (7-20, 0-16 HL) went up against No. 19/15 Green Bay (24-3, 14-2 HL) on Monday, and suffered a 66-37 loss inside the UIC Pavilion. The Flames were held to single digits in two out of four quarters by the nation's No. 1 defense.

The Flames also honored UIC-great Terri Bender for her all-time career assists record, as well as thanked her for all of her contributions to UIC women's basketball.

First Half Highlights
  • Green Bay was able to draw first blood, but the Gabryelle Johnson went beyond the arc for UIC's first points. Catera Etheridge drew a foul on a layup to convert a three-point play to give the Flames an early 6-2 lead.
  • The Flames played hard defense to make it 12-7 in the later stages of the first, but Green Bay put up five straight in the final two minutes to tie it at 12 apiece.
  • The Phoenix erupted, going on an 11-2 run to start the second for a 24-14 advantage. Tia Tedford sunk a hook shot to end a nearly four minute scoring draught for the Flames, 24-16.
  • The Phoenix entered a draught of their own, and went 0-for-7 until Lindstrom was able to sink a three, 27-17. Lindstrom was able to drive in a layup, and Tylah Lampley got on the board for UIC to wrap up the first half 29-19 in favor of Green Bay.
Second Half Highlights
  • Lindstrom continued to dominate the Green Bay offense, tipping one in to start the second half for the Phoenix. Catera Etheridge went yard for a three, which bounced off the rim and went in to start things off for the Flames, 31-22.
  • Green Bay opened things up with a 10-0 run, and Taylor Toney came through with a short jumper to put a stop to the streak, 41-24. Tia Tedford wrapped up the third by sinking one from beyond the arc, but the Flames were held to just eight points in the third frame.
  • The Flames trailed 48-27 to start the fourth, but both teams were only able to put in foul shots through the first 2:24. Both teams laid one up to make it 52-31, and Green Bay put in four more free throws before ending the field goal-less streak on both sides, 58-31.
  • Lampley ended UIC's field goal draught with a triple, 62-34, but the Flames would only get one more bucket and a foul shot before the final buzzer, as the Phoenix took it 66-37.
Facts and Figures
  • Catera Etheridge led UIC with eight points, followed by Teodora Zagorac and Tia Tedford, who each netted six.
  • Gabryelle Johnson led the Flames on the boards with seven rebounds, followed by Taylor Toney with three.
  • Abreanna Lake continued handing out helpers, totaling four assists to lead the Flames in the category.
  • The Flames out-shot Green Bay in the first quarter making 38.5 percent from the field compared to The Phoenix' 31.3 percent. Green Bay outshot UIC overall, netting 41.8 percent off all shots while holding the Flames to just 29.8 percent.
  • UIC was outscored in the paint, 38-12, and its bench was also outscored, 19-8.
  • The Flames committed 20 turnovers, which the Phoenix converted to 24 points. UIC was able to grab just a pair off nine Green Bay miscues.
