The University of Illinois at Chicago men's basketball team took a narrow 42-40 lead heading into halftime of their home opener with the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners.
What happened coming out of the locker room was a sight to behold as the Flames exploded for a 33-6 run en route to a 91-75 victory at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday night.
"This feels good," UIC head coach Jimmy Collins said. "What excited me the most is that we came out of the locker room and developed a killer instinct in the second half."
Guard Joel Bullock paced the Flames with a career-best 23 points. The senior was deadly from long-range as he connected on all three of his three-point attempts in the second half.
In fact, the entire UIC team was solid from the outside. The Flames drained 9-of-13 attempts for a .692 clip.
Junior guard Jordan Kardos was equally effective from the outside as he also drilled three 3-pointers for 14 points.
The Flames success from the outside opened up the middle for 6-9 forward Maurice Brown. Brown, a sophomore, was held to four points in the first half. He exploded in the second half with 13 points (5-for-6 FT) to finish the game with 17 points.
Sophomore center Joe Scott (13 points) was also a force inside early on, but foul trouble was his early demise as he fouled out with 7:39 remaining in the game.
Collins believes that his squad has a lot going for it heading into their road matchup against Central Michigan on Saturday.
"It was a great effort," Collins said. "I see a lot of positives on this team."
