Chicago, Ill. - Neither UIC nor Chicago State was very successful inside the three-point arc in their non-conference match-up at the UIC Pavilion on Saturday.
But beyond the arc was a different story.
Junior guard Jordan Kardos converted all four of his three-point attempts for a season and game-high 16 points as the Flames defeated Chicago State 67-55. Overall, Kardos was five of 11 from the field.
"It's a shooter's mentality," Kardos said. "If you know that you're a good shooter, you keep shooting. Eventually they'll start falling."
Sophomore Maurice Brown recorded his second `double-double' in as many games with 10 points and 12 rebounds for UIC while freshman guard Aaron Carr contributed 10 points to the victory.
With the victory, UIC improves to 6-5 overall and 5-1 at the UIC Pavilion. The Cougars drop to 3-6 for the season.
The Flames opened up a 31-21 halftime lead behind the efforts of sophomore center Joe Scott (8 points) and Brown (7 points). The Cougars converted only 6-of-23 shots in the first half while turning the ball over 11 times.
For the game, Chicago State turned the ball over 19 times and UIC took advantage by scoring 29 points off the Cougars miscues.
"We knew it would be a dogfight," UIC Head Coach Jimmy Collins said. "We were very fortunate to get the lead and hold onto it. We hung together and it was a great victory."
Chicago State came out of the intermission with a purpose as the Cougars narrowed the Flames' lead to 56-50 with 2:46 left in the game. UIC, however, responded as Kardos drilled a three-pointer with 1:19 left in the game to secure the victory.
"You have to give credit to UIC - they got after us," Chicago State Head Coach Bo Ellis said. "We clawed and got ourselves back in the game. But Kardos hit some big shots and it broke our backs."
Chicago State forward Tony Jones led the Cougars with 16 points while junior guard Danny Osby came off the bench for 10 points.
