Feb. 10, 2000 - Chicago, Ill. - UIC held Wisconsin-Green Bay to just 16 second-half points while hitting 50% of its shots from the field in the final period to claim a 59-44 victory earlier this evening at the UIC Pavilion.
"Our defense was tenacious tonight," Head Coach Jimmy Collins said following the game. "I think the 16 points we held Green Bay to in the second half reflects that."
The 16 points scored in a half and 44 total points were both record-lows at the Pavilion.
"When you score 44 points, no matter how good your defense is, it's going to be hard to win," commented Green Bay guard B.J. LaRue.
Theandre Kimbrough and Maurice Brown each scored 16 points to lead the Flames (8-17, 3-7 MCC). Both were also strong on the boards as Kimbrough snared a team-high eight caroms while Brown finished with seven rebounds.
Jerry Carstensen led the Phoenix (12-12, 4-5 MCC) with 15 points and six rebounds.
UW-Green Bay led by as many as seven points in the first half, but was held scoreless over the final 4:32 of the first stanza as UIC tallied the final five points of the period.
Both teams started the second half cold as the Phoenix was held scoreless until the 15:39 mark. UIC, likewise, managed just one field goal during that span as the defensive battled was knotted 30-30 at the 15:39 mark.
The Phoenix were within three (39-36) with 9:03 left, but would manage just eight points the rest of the way as they were outscored 20-8 by the Flames.
UIC will look for back-to-back MCC wins for the first time this season on Saturday, Feb. 12, when they welcome Wisconsin-Milwaukee to the UIC Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
