March 16, 2000

Box Score

Clarksville, Ill. - The UIC baseball team couldn't capitalize on six Austin Peay errors as the Flames fell to the Governors, 11-10, Thursday night.

After getting started nearly 45 minutes late due to rainstorms in the area, the two squads played scoreless through the first two innings before the contest became a seesaw battle as the lead switched dugouts seven times.

Austin Peay took a 2-0 lead with solo runs coming in the third and fourth innings. The Flames then rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Governors quickly snatched their lead back as they put four runs of their own on the board in the bottom half of the fifth.

Joe Schicker and Sean McNichols led off the fifth-inning rally with walks and then back-to-back doubles by Eric Duke and Bob Rosinski scored three followed by a single off the bat of J.P. Moran to score Rosinski.

UIC moved ahead again with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth for a 7-6 margin before Austin Peay reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth as an error at third base cost UIC a pair of runs.

The never-say-die Flames, however, rallied once again in the top of the ninth to score three runs as McNichols, Duke and Rosinski slugged back-to-back-to-back singles followed by a two-RBI double from Rosner. An Austin Peay error accounted for UIC's third run and gave the Flames a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Reliever Brad Goebbert, however, was unable to stop the Governors' rally in the final stanza as they had three runs cross the plate for the 11-10 victory. Goebbert falls to 0-2 for the 2000 campaign while UIC also drops to 4-12. With the win, Austin Peay extended its win streak to seven-straight and improved to 13-5 overall.

UIC will play in Nashville this weekend for a three-game series with Belmont, starting tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium.
