Box Score
UIC pitchers Gene Rausch, Eric Szalo and Steve Carlson combined to throw a two-hit shutout against Benedictine University Tuesday evening to give the Flames their sixth win of the season, a 4-0 decision.
Rausch, the starter and benefactor of the 4-0 win for his first victory of the season, tossed four innings without giving up a hit while striking out three. Szalo then worked three innings of relief and surrendered just two singles before Carlson closed out the game with two no-hit innings of work.
At the plate, rookie third baseman Mike Lorenzo hit his first home run of the season, a shot off of the scoreboard in left field, to give the Flames the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
UIC then solidified its lead in the bottom of the eighth as it rallied for three more runs as walks to Chuck Peters and Curtis Granderson, singles by Sean McNichols and Eric Duke and a hit-by-pitch for Kevin Nelson led to the three-run rally.
The Flames, who scheduled the outing with Benedictine earlier in the day after losing a pair of games to Mother Nature during their spring trip last week, return to the road this weekend for a three-game series at Evansville starting Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
