Ann Arbor, Mich. - All-American senior Eric Lukin netted his third goal of the season and assisted on UIC's other tally as the Flames improved to 3-1-1 on the year with a 2-0 shutout of Michigan on a rainy Thursday evening.
Lukin, who finished second in the country in scoring last season, broke through in the 65th minute as his penalty kick tore into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.
Freshman Dennis King would give the Flames an insurance goal in the 72nd minute of play as he took a pass from Lukin and scooted it past Michigan keeper Albert Geldres from 15 yards out. It was King's first collegiate goal.
"We passed the ball a lot better in the second half, our ball control was much better as well," Head Coach Sasha Begovic commented after the game. "Under sloppy conditions you have to make clean passes and we didn't do that in the first half. We improved in the second and Lukin made a nice pass to King and he finished well."
UIC's Chris Jamal and Scott Greene combined to shut out the Wolverines, who fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Michigan and UIC played through a steady downpour in the first half which proved to be a defensive stanza as the two teams managed just five shots on goal.
The Flames' best scoring chance in the first half came off the foot of defenseman Joe Morelli, who rocketed a shot on goal from just inside the midfield stripe that was stopped by Geldres.
UIC's defense stymied Michigan's attack most of the night, though, allowing the Wolverines just four shots on goal, all of which came in the first half of play.
Michigan's defense proved to be just as tough, allowing UIC just two shots on goal in the first half and four in the entire contest. But the Flames made both of their shots count in the second half as both found their way into the back of the goal.
UIC, which has now won its last three contests, will put its 18-game home- winning streak on the line on Sunday, Sept. 17, as they welcome Cal-Poly to Flames Field at 4:00 p.m.
