Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team got all it could handle from IUPUI in Friday night's opener of the 2000 Bowling Green Invitational. The Jaguars edged out the Flames in the first two games, but Don August's squad came storming back to take the final three and the match 14-16, 13-15, 15-5, 15-5, 15-5.
With the win, UIC improved to 8-1 on the year, marking the best-ever start to a season for the Flames.
Freshman Lindsey Filkins led UIC's charge as she posted her first career 20/20, finishing with a season-high 25 kills and season-best 25 digs while also adding five service aces. Junior Amy Zabojnik also had a career night as she came off the bench to tally career-bests in kills (10), digs (11) and blocks (3).
Senior Erica Anderson (64 assists, 19 digs) and freshman Teaha Shepperd (14 kills, 14 digs) posted double-double efforts in the Flames' win while senior Jill Greer was solid with 12 kills, nine blocks and seven digs.
Early hitting woes seemed to plague UIC, but the Flames were able to turn it on down the stretch as they posted an attack percentage of .481 over the final two games, including eight kills on 13 attempts in the rally-scoring fifth game.
UIC is back at it early tomorrow as they take on Evansville at 10:00 a.m. to open second-day action at the BGSU Invite. The Flames will then wrap up the tournament later that evening when they take on host Bowling Green at 6:00 p.m.
