Volleyball Outlasts Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio - Playing without senior middle hitter Jill Greer, who missed the contest due to an illness, the UIC volleyball team held off Cleveland State Friday night with a 12-15, 15-7, 15-6, 9-15, 15-9, triumph in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference opener for both schools.

With the win, the Flames, who have now beaten CSU eight-straight times, improved to 10-2 on the season, 1-0 in the MCC. Cleveland State falls to 7-5, 0-1 in the league.

The dynamic freshmen duo of Lindsey Filkins and Teaha Shepperd made a immediate impression on the MCC in the league debut for both. Shepperd posted a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs, but really killed the Vikings with a career-best seven service aces. Filkins added a team-high 20 kills while also tabbing 13 digs.

Sophomore Gina Caneva and junior Lynn Clarkson picked up the slack in Greer's absence as the duo combined for 18 kills, eight blocks and four digs in the middle. Junior outside hitter Vicki Lublow had her best match of the year as she set a season high with 15 kills while posting a new career best with a match-high 29 digs. Senior setter Erica Anderson was her usual steady self, dishing out 62 assists while also adding six kills and five blocks.

Cleveland State was led by senior Michele Smith, who continued her recent hitting dominance as she totaled 25 kills with an attack percentage of .535 (25-2-43).

The Flames will look to remain undefeated at home this season on Tuesday, Sept. 26, as they welcome Valparaiso to the UIC Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
