Chicago, Ill. - Junior guard Jon-Pierre Mitchom played a total 55 minutes out of 60 minutes and poured in a career-high 33 points to lead UIC to a 112-106 four overtime victory over UW-Milwaukee at the UIC Pavilion on Thursday.
"I have never been more proud of a team that hung together for the length of the game," UIC head coach Jimmy Collins said. "Everyone contributed to this win."
Sophomore forward Maurice Brown also added a career-high 25 points to help propel the Flames (7-8, 1-1 MCC). UIC also received solid efforts from Joel Bullock (21 points), Joe Scott (12 points) and Jordan Kardos (11 points).
UW-Milwaukee (8-7, 0-2 MCC) shot early and often from beyond the three-point arc as they converted 18 of their 41 three-point attempts, which tied a MCC record.
Leading the way for the Panthers was reserve guard Jason Frederick. Frederick (five 3-pointers) scored a team-high 27 points.
There were heroes a plenty in this contest as Panthers' guard Dan Weisse (18 points) hit the game-tying three pointer with one second left in regulation to put the score at 69-69.
It was Frederick's turn for UWM in the first overtime to become the hero of the day as he converted a three-pointer with 7.6 seconds left to give the Panthers a 78-77 lead.
Collins called a time-out and on the ensuing posession, Mitchom found himself streaking towards the basket for an uncontested lay-up and was fouled by UWM's Clay Tucker (12 points). Mitchom hit the front end of the charity shots, but missed the second one to send the game into its second overtime with the game tied at 78.
Again, UIC was poised to grab the victory but Weisse struck again as he drained a three-pointer with 14.2 seconds left to send the game into its third overtime tied at 90.
The third overtime called for heroics from the home team as the Panthers held a 97-95 lead with eight seconds remaining. Bullock, like Mitchom in the first overtime, found himself streaking towards the basket and was fouled.
Bullock, a 83.3 percent shooter from the foul line, hit both shots to tie the game at 97 to give the Flames an extra five minutes.
And boy did they take advantage of it. UIC junior guard Taurus Cook (8 points) scored six of his eight points in the final frame to secure the lengthy victory for the Flames.
"I've never been involved in a game like this," Mitchom said. "In the third overtime, I looked up and I said `Man, we've been playing for a long time out here."
