Milwaukee, Wis. - The UIC women's tennis team opened the 2001 spring season in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon as they upset #56 Marquette, 4-3, at the Helfaer Center.
"I thought we just wanted it a little more than Marquette did today," Head Coach Mary Dailey remarked after the match. "This team has shown a difference from last year's in that in critical points in the match they didn't give it away. They kept fighting."
The Flames (1-0), who had lost all 12 of its previous meetings with the Golden Eagles (1-1), struggled out of the gate as they lost the doubles point as Marquette swept the three doubles contests.
UIC rebounded in singles play, though, as Jacki Farr (No. 3), Zvjezdana Malesevic (No.4), Zorica Malesevic (No. 5) and Karen Liwanpo (No. 6) all recorded straight-set wins to give the Flames a 4-3 victory.
"I'm hoping this trend continues," Dailey remarked of her team's confident attitude heading into the match. "We have another tough match this weekend (vs. #33 Illinois), but if we come out like the way we did versus Marquette it will be a close match."
As Dailey stated, the Flames will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 27, as they travel down state to visit #33 Illinois at 5:00 p.m.
