Volleyball Picks Up Road Win At Valparaiso

Oct. 9, 2001

Box Score

Valparaiso, Ind. - The UIC women's volleyball team took a break from Horizon League action Tuesday night as it visited the Valparaiso Crusaders. And the Flames got exactly what they were looking for as they pulled out a 30-22, 30-32, 30-27, 30-15 victory.

After claiming victory in game one, UIC came out flat in game two and trailed by as many as seven points early on. The Flames, however, fought back to take a 30-29 lead. But a service error by Lara Clarkson on game point tied the game up at 30-30 before the Crusaders took the next two points to tie the match up at 1-1.

Game three was a seesaw battle, which UIC ended up snagging, 30-27. After trailing 24-23, the Flames went on a tear to take seven of the final 10 points.

Game four was all UIC, as it never trailed en route to a 30-15 final score.

Sophomore Teaha Shepperd (14 kills, 22 digs), senior Vicki Lublow (13 kills, 27 digs) and sophomore Lindsey Filkins (11 kills, 13 digs) led the way for the Flames.

"We finally relaxed and started ripping balls," Head Coach Don August said. "That's what we've been asking them to do for so long - just go up and fire and not worry about the consequences.

"We needed this win and hopefully we can get on a little bit of roll," August continued, "especially with the conference games coming up this weekend."

The Flames (6-10), whose victory against Valparaiso last night was just their second road win of the year, return home this weekend for a pair of Horizon League outings. On Friday, Oct. 12, UIC hosts Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m. at the Physical Education Building. On Saturday, the Flames will take on Youngstown State at 2:00 p.m.
