Ball State Bests Women's Tennis, 5-2

Feb. 22, 2001

Muncie, Ind. - The UIC women's tennis team opened its three-match road trip on a sour note on Thursday as they fell 5-2 to Ball State at the Muncie YMCA Indoor Tennis Center.

The loss snapped the Flames two-match winning streak and drops UIC to 4-5 for the season. Ball State, meanwhile won its fifth-straight match and its seventh in its last eight to move to 7-2 on the year.

The Cardinals jumped out early on UIC as they took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. In the No. 1 doubles match, Nicole Derouin and Ayca Gumuscu were victorious (8-4), but the Flames fell in the No. 2 and No. 3 contests to give the important point to Ball State.

In singles play, the Cardinals put the match away by claiming four of the six matches in straight sets. Gumuscu (6-4, 6-2/No. 3) and Alyson Stalzer (6-4, 6-2/No. 5), who is now 6-1 in singles this spring, tallied the lone wins for UIC.

The Flames will look to get back on track tomorrow as they open conference play at Butler.
