Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team went 1-1 on its weekend road trip through the state of Indiana as they topped Indiana State on Friday, 4-3, before getting aced, 7-0, at Indiana on Saturday.
With the split, the Flames now sit at 8-6 on the season, having won three of their last four matches.
Versus the Sycamores on Friday afternoon, UIC used a late comeback to secure the victory. The Flames trailed 3-2 with Nicole Derouin and Ayca Gumuscu, the last two competitors, trailing 3-0 and 3-1 in the third set of their respective singles matches. Both rallied back, though, as Derouin took the No. 2 singles fray 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, while Gumuscu prevailed 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-5.
"Having Nicole and Ayca comeback the way they did was great," remarked UIC head coach Mary Dailey. "It was our first outdoor match of the season, so it was a bit of an adjustment and we looked a little rusty after being off for spring break. Indiana State is definitely stronger than they were last year, though, but fortunately we still found a way to pull out a win."
Kim Harris (6-4, 6-3/No. 6) gave UIC its other singles win versus the Sycamores while the Flames also took the doubles points behind victories from the tandems of Derouin/Gumuscu (No. 1/8-0) and Alyson Stalzer/Karen Liwanpo (No. 3/8-2).
On Saturday, things started off bad for UIC and never got any better as they were swept, 7-0, at Indiana.
The duo of Derouin and Gumuscu led the No. 1 doubles match versus the Hoosiers, 7-6, and seemed poised to give the Flames an early win. But Indiana rallied back to take the match 9-7, and went on to sweep through all the remaining contests on the day.
"When we play a team that is better than us, we don't even do the basic things right," stated Dailey. "It's still a confidence thing. We think we have to play at such a high level against these teams, that we forget to do the fundamental things. We need to just go out and play."
Dailey's crew is now off until Wednesday, April 4, when they welcome crosstown rival DePaul to Flames Courts at 4:00 p.m.
