Chicago, Ill. - The 'Windy City' lived up to its name on Saturday as gusting winds made for a trying afternoon for the UIC women's tennis team as they welcomed a pair of Midwestern Collegiate Conference foes to Flames Courts.
In the end, though, the Flames prevailed, improving to a perfect 3-0 in league play with a 6-1 victory over Cleveland State and a 4-3 triumph over Wright State. With the wins, UIC is now 10-8 overall.
UIC got on the board first in the opening match versus the Vikings as they edged out CSU for the doubles point with Jacki Farr and Karen Liwanpo cruising to an 8-0 win in the No. 3 match, before Kim Harris and Alyson Stalzer squeaked out a 9-8 vicotry in the No. 2 match.
In singles play, the Flames took control of the contest, sweeping the No. 2-6 affairs in straight sets for the 6-1 final score. Cleveland State's lone win came in the No. 1 slot where Irina Strembitsky upset reigning MCC Player of the Year Farr, 6-1, 6-3.
The second match of the day pitted UIC against an improved Wright State squad.
Just like in the Flames' morning contest, they took the early lead by claiming two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 advantage.
UIC then got what it needed in singles play as Farr rebounded for a straight-sets win in the No. 1 match while sophomore Nicole Derouin won her second singles match of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Kara Dunbar. Zvjezdana Malesevic would then give the Flames their fourth and deciding point in the No. 6 contest with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Maggie Jacobs.
Mary Dailey's crew will put its 3-0 MCC record on the line on Friday, April 13, when they battle Detroit at 2:00 p.m.
