Chicago, Ill. - Youngstown State held Illinois-Chicago scoreless for a stretch of 9:36 as the Penguins held on for the 64-56 victory at the newly renovated UIC Pavilion on Thursday night.
Barbora Fabianova led the Penguins with 17 points, while teammates Heather Harris (15 points) and Cathy Hanek (14 points) each turned in solid efforts.
UIC drops to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League with the loss, while Youngstown State improves to 6-9 and 3-2 on the season.
With the score tied at 19-19, Youngstown State went on a 19-0 run for a lead that they would never relinquish. During that span, Harris led the Penguins with seven points followed by five points apiece from Fabianova and Hanek.
UIC was able to cut the lead to 55-50 with 2:26 remaining in the second half. Leading the rally for the Flames was junior guard LeKesha Williams as she scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Youngstown State, however, was able to hold on, as guard Maggie Johnston converted five free throws to help seal the victory for the Penguins.
Junior Zsuzsa Tarnai recorded three 3-pointers for the Flames and ripped down eight rebounds, while teammate Stesha Rhodes chipped in 10 points.
UIC will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they will host the Butler Bulldogs at 3:00 PM at the UIC Pavilion.
