Chicago, Ill. - After grabbing the doubles point with a pair of victories, the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team ran off five-of-six singles wins to defeat the visiting Northern Illinois Huskies, 6-1 at the Oak Park Tennis & Fitness Center on Friday afternoon.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Derouin and Ayca Gumuscu got things rolling, as they edged NIU's No. 1 team, 9-8(7-2) in a competitive match.
The senior-laden No. 3 doubles team of Alyson Stalzer and Karen Liwanpo also won, defeating Tanja Sukovic and Karrie Tyioran of NIU 9-7.
After Gumuscu, Zorica Malesevic and Britta Dohmann won their respective singles matches, two hotly contested matches remained, as Derouin and Stalzer were up against the wall in their matches.
Eventually, both earned victories, as Derouin defeated Branka Savic 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot, while Stalzer was able to outlast NIU's Molly Opel at No. 6 singles.
The victory improved the Flames to 3-5 on the ledger.
