Toledo, Ohio - The University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team is poised to make another run at the league title, and Friday night's victory over Bowling Green just might get the Flames on track to fulfill that goal.
The Flames earned a slim 4-3 win over the host Falcons at the Shadow Valley Racquet Club.
After the Flames snared all three doubles matches, which gave UIC the crucial point in the match, the Falcons won three of the first five singles matches to even the series.
It came down to the No. 6 singles match, where UIC senior Alyson Stalzer was pitted against the Falcons' Laura Kokinda.
The reliable Stalzer came up big for the Flames and grabbed the fourth and winning point in a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 match, where Stalzer was actually down 2-5 in the second set.
Nicole Derouin and Britta Dohmann were also singles winners for the Flames, as Derouin won in the No. 1 slot, beating Lisa Maloney 6-4, 6-3. Dohmann picked up a win at No. 3 singles, defeating Susan Schoenberger 6-2, 6-2.
Derouin teamed with Ayca Gumuscu for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Dohmann and Zvjezdana Malesevic paired to win at No. 2 doubles.
Stalzer picked up teammate and fellow senior Karen Liwanpo to win at No. 3 doubles handily 8-3.
The Flames are back at it Saturday, facing off with the Wolverines of Michigan at 10:00 AM in Ann Arbor, Mich.
