Soccer Blanks Marquette In Season Opener, 3-0

Chicago, Ill. -The UIC men's soccer team opened the 2003 season on Wednesday afternoon by blanking visiting Marquette, 3-0, at Flames Field.

The Flames (1-0) were paced by senior Pete Kelley, who netted a career-best two goals versus the Golden Eagles (0-3). Sophomore Roberto Gallo set up both Kelley strikes with a pair of assists.

Kelley netted his first goal in the 19th-minute to give UIC a 1-0 lead, then capped the scoring in the 51st-minute with a chip past the goalie from his knees from six yards out.

Freshman Eric Cervantes accounted for UIC's other tally with a goal in the 24th-minute. John DeVae and Brody Simkins were credited with assists on the Cervantes goal.

Sophomore keeper Ross Cain, who tied the UIC single-season record with six shutouts last year, notched his first of the 2003 campaign on Wednesday, tallying seven saves in the process.

Marquette keeper Adam Ubert posted four saves in defeat for Marquette. Derek Gutierrez also had a solid showing for the Golden Eagles putting three shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Cain.

The Flames will be back in action on Friday, September 5th, as they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to compete in the Memphis/Diadora Tournament. UIC opens the event by taking on Centenary at 4:00 p.m.
