Women's Tennis Defeats Northern Illinois, 5-2

DeKalb, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis snapped its two-match skid with a solid 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Thursday afternoon.

The Flames (8-6) took a close doubles slate with two 8-6 victories and closed out the win with four singles wins over the Huskies (4-5).

Beatriz Cabrera led the way with a dominating 6-0, 6-3 win over Cassie Drake at No. 1 singles. Cabrera also teamed with Corey Steven, a 6-3, 6-4 singles winner over Krista McIntyre, to down Branka Savic and Ivonne Andrade in doubles play.

Molly Smith downed Dani Martinez, 6-1, 6-1, to run her winning streak to seven matches, while Athanasia Giannoulopoulou wrapped up the singles wins with a strong 6-7(1), 6-0, 6-2 comeback victory over Megan Brooks.

Ayca Gumuscu and Iris Jaklin suffered tough-luck three-set losses that were close most of the way.

The Flames return to action on April 2nd to take on Horizon League rival Detroit-Mercy in Green Bay, Wisconsin beginning at 2 p.m.
