Chicago, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team had their four-match winning streak snapped at the hands of crosstown rival DePaul on Wednesday, losing a tough 6-1 match at the UIC Outdoor Courts.
UIC (11-7) received their sole singles victory from Beatriz Cabrera, who downed the Blue Demons' Gergana Ganeva at No. 1 singles in a strong 7-5, 6-3. win.
The victory extended Cabrera's singles winning streak to six matches.
Cabrera also teamed with Melanie Humphrey for an 8-2 doubles win.
Molly Smith's nine-match winning streak was snapped as the sophomore standout lost a 6-4, 6-0 match to Brenda Leung at No. 4 singles. Smith moved up to the fourth spot in place of Corey Steven, who was away dealing with a family matter.
Ayca Gumuscu and Humphrey were downed in three-set singles losses. Gumuscu, in the final home meet of her career, lost a back-and-forth 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 match to Marina Parashkevova, while Humphrey dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 decision to Petra Rehsova..
Outgoing seniors Gumuscu and Athanasia Giannoulopoulou were honored before the contest.
UIC returns to action on April 17th to take on Horizon League rival UW-Milwaukee in Milwaukee, Wis. for the regualr season finale.
