Soccer Drops Horizon League Opener At Detroit, 2-0

Sept. 19, 2004

Detroit, Mich.- On the road for the sixth time in seven games, the University of Illinois at Chicago soccer team faced a tough task on Sunday when they faced Detroit at Titan Field.

Despite posting a 4-0-2 record since 1998 against the Titans, UIC put a much younger team on the field against a more experienced Detroit squad this time around.

After a solid defensive first half, the Flames could not get anything going offensively in the final 45 minutes as Detroit scored two unanswered second period goals for a 2-0 victory over UIC in the Horizon League opener.

The Flames (1-6-0, 0-1 Horizon League) held the host Titans scoreless for the first 45 minutes, thanks to three saves by netminder Jeff Engelbrecht.

But Detroit (3-2-0, 1-0 Horizon League) struck in the 53rd minute as senior Ablaye Camara took Aaron Smith's pass and shot it past Engelbrecht for the 1-0 lead.

The Titans put the game away in the 89th minute when Andrew Ornoch took Michael De Simone's cross and converted for the insurance goal.

Detroit's Sasha Boskovic made four saves, including two in the second half to prevent a UIC comeback.

Pavle Dundjer led the way with four shots, including one against goal.

UIC returns to the road on Wednesday when the Flames face Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
