Soccer Shutout By Northern Illinois, 1-0

Sept. 7, 2004

Box Score

DeKalb, Ill.- A physical rivalry match between the University of Illinois at Chicago soccer team and Northern Illinois ended up being decided by an early penalty kick as the Huskies' Kevin Woerner knocked in the game-winning score in the 14th minute to give NIU the 1-0 victory over the Flames on Tuesday evening at the Huskie Soccer Complex.

UIC (0-3-0) could not get on the board and suffered a second straight defeat at the hands of a converted penalty kick and their second consecutive one-goal loss.

Jeff Engelbrecht made his second straight start in goal for the Flames, posting seven saves and allowing only the early Woerner score.

NIU (1-2-0) picked up its first win thanks to the early goal and a shutout performance by goalkeeper Steve Goletz, who made five saves.

It was a heated matchup the entire contest, especially late. Eight yellow cards were handed out, with six of them in the last 23 minutes, and the two teams combined to attack each other with 39 fouls.

The Flames offense built on Sunday's attacking offensive showing by taking 13 shots, five of which were against goal. All five were by a different player, with Sam Reindl, Tonci Skroce, Nick Sutter, Ryan Singer and Pawel Otachel all making attempts to get UIC on the board.

UIC is back in action as they continue their road trip at the Seahawk Soccer Classic in Wilmington, N.C. The Classic begins on Friday as the Flames take on the host UNC Wilmington Seahawks beginning at 6:30 p.m.
