Soccer Battles UW-Milwaukee To Scoreless Draw

Oct. 13, 2005

Box Score

Milwaukee, Wis.- The last time the UIC soccer team visited Engelmann Field, the Flames tied the defending league champion Panthers by a 2-2 mark in 2003.

Fast forward to Wednesday afternoon, and UIC and UW-Milwaukee again battled to a draw, but this time it was of the scoreless nature as the Flames and Panthers engaged in a 0-0 double overtime defensive battle that halted the three-game winning streaks of both squads.

UIC (6-3-2, 1-2-1 Horizon League) and goalkeeper Jeff Engelbrecht posted the fourth clean sheet of the 2005 campaign. The Flames posted four shutouts combined during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Wednesday's tie was only the second draw that UW-Milwaukee (7-2-4, 3-1-1 Horizon League) has endured at Engelmann Field since 2001. The other tie was at the hands of the Flames in 2003.

Engelbrecht made seven saves on the day and kept the Panthers at bay for 110 minutes. In his only two starts against UW-Milwaukee, Engelbrecht has made 11 saves and held the Panthers scoreless for 200 minutes.

Both teams had opportunities. UIC launched 20 shots on the day, while UW-Milwaukee attempted 25. Sophomore midfielder Pavle Dundjer was credited with a team-best nine shot attempts for UIC.

UIC entered the game as the fourth-ranked team in the current NSCAA/adidas Midwest Region rankings. The Panthers came into the match ranked No. 25 in the latest Soccer America national rankings and fifth in the Great Lakes Region.

UW-Milwaukee keeper Grant Fernstrum, the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week, notched his fourth straight shutout and stopped eight UIC shots against goal.

The Flames return home to face league rival Butler at Flames Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Central.
