Chicago, Ill. - With the UIC Flames volleyball team (11-18, 7-6) ahead by two games versus Cleveland State (18-9, 10-3), the second-place Vikings battled back at the Flames Athletic Center to grab the 3-2 (30-28, 30-28, 22-30, 20-30, 17-19) win tonight.
UIC will play its last regular-season match versus Youngstown State Saturday, November 12th at 4 pm before hosting the 2005 Horizon League Championship next week.
Junior Maura McCarthy picked up her fourth straight double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Katarina Nedeljkovic pounded 18 kills and added eight digs on the night and senior Tisha Graf tied her career-best with five total blocks and marked a season-high eight digs versus the Vikings.
Cleveland State had two players post double-doubles tonight. Jenna Maddocks led the Vikings with 21 kills and 12 digs, while Emily Clark posted 15 kills and 11 digs on the night.
The Flames trailed the Vikings early in game one, but UIC chipped away at CSU's lead and tied it up at 22-22 on a service ace by junior Ambria Springer. The Flames held on and won 30-28 on a kill by McCarthy.
UIC picked up game two 30-28, forcing the Vikings to a -.023 hitting percentage.
Cleveland State battled back to force the match into a fifth and final game. CSU pushed ahead with the Flames tying it up three times before the Vikings clinched the 19-17 heartbreaker.
The Flames are set to host the 2005 Horizon League Volleyball Championship next week from November 17-20.
