Chicago, Ill. - Despite four UIC players scoring in double digits Saturday afternoon at the Pavilion, the Flames fell to Northwestern 81-78. UIC junior LaShonda Grant led on offense with 21 points and senior Chrissy Dizon and sophomore Nicole Rinaldi pulled down eight rebounds a piece.
Dizon added 19 points and six assists on the afternoon while Krystal Hugelier and Kelly True tallied 14 points for the Flames.
Ifeoma Okonkwo led Northwestern with a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds. A.J. Glasauer posted 17 points and Sara Stutz and Kristin Cartwright both added ten points in NU's win.
The Wildcats struck first with a layup by Northwestern's leading scorer, Ifeoma Okonkwo, but the Flames responded with a three pointer from Grant. NU led by nine with 7:48 on the clock when the Flames hit a 7-0 run to get within two points going into the half (31-29).
UIC sparked on offense in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field. The Flames pulled away from NU with a nine-point advantage (55-46) on a jumper by Nikki Grobbecker.
With less than ten minutes left in regulation, the Wildcats chipped away at the Flames lead and tied the game at 65-65 with 5:09 on the clock. With Northwestern up by one, UIC's Hugelier hit a three to make the score 70-68.
Several quick jumpers by the Wildcats gave NU a six-point advantage with less than two minutes left in the game. The Flames then cut the lead to one on a three pointer by Dizon, but UIC would run out of time.
Northwestern clinched the 81-78 win over the Flames.
UIC will host Eastern Illinois this Monday, November 28th at the Pavilion with tip-off beginning at 7 pm. The Flames then hit the road to begin their away schedule, starting with Northern Illinois at 7 pm on December 2nd.
