Statesboro, Ga. - The UIC men's basketball team couldn't overcome a furious second-half rally by Georgia Southern on Monday night as the Eagles downed the Flames 89-69 in front of 1,923 at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Georgia Southern (4-2), which shot a blistering 81% from the field in the second half, outscored UIC (3-3) 20-6 in the first six minutes of the final stanza to turn a halftime tie into a 14-point lead that would never dip back into single digits.
The Eagles were 8-for-8 from the floor during their run, including four three-pointers.
With the win, Georgia Southern extended its home winning streak to 14 games, which rates 10th best in the country.
Senior Justin Bowen had a strong effort in defeat for UIC, posting his third double-double of the season with a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Othyus Jeffers added 13 points for the Flames while junior Jovan Stefanov chipped in with 10.
Senior Elton Nesbitt led all scorers with 26 points for the Eagles, who shot 63% from the floor for the game. He was one of five Georgia Southern players to score in double figures.
The score was tied at halftime, 40-40, as UIC shot 73% from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Flames out-rebounded their opponent for the fifth straight game, pulling down 30 caroms to the Eagles' 28.
After two long road trips the Flames now return to the Windy City where they will play three of their next four games at home, including a tilt with Chicago State on Sunday, Dec. 4th, at 5:00 p.m.
