Chicago, Ill - The UIC volleyball team fell to Butler (8-16, 4-8) in four games Saturday afternoon at the Flames Athletic Center. UIC (11-16, 7-4) is now set to play their final two regular-season matches next weekend before hosting the 2005 Horizon League Volleyball Championship.
The Flames led the Bulldogs early in game one, but Butler tied it at 7-7 on a kill by Alicia Coltrane. Butler and UIC tied it up seven times before the Bulldogs took the lead on a kill by Michelle DeGeeter.
Butler then pulled away and took game one (30-26).
With strong offense in game two, the Bulldogs took the early advantage. UIC got within one point on a kill by senior Tisha Graf, but the Bulldogs continued to put up points and grabbed the 30-22 win.
Trailing by two games, the Flames came out strong in game three. With a 4-0 lead, the Bulldogs responded with three straight points, but the Flames continued to dominate on offense and took a 22-16 lead on a kill by junior Maura McCarthy.
UIC sparked a 6-0 run late in the game and beat Butler 30-21.
Game four mirrored game two for the Bulldogs. UIC chipped away at the Butler lead, but would only get within one point of tying it up. Butler clinched the 3-1 League victory.
Junior Maura McCarthy led the team and posted a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs for the second match in a row versus Butler Saturday. Sophomore Katarina Nedeljkovic added 10 kills and junior Katie Kozak contributed 15 digs and 40 assists on the afternoon.
Michelle DeGeeter led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and Megan Knightly posted 15 digs.
UIC will play and host its last regular-season matches next Friday, November 11th at 7 pm versus Cleveland State and Saturday, November 12th at 4 pm versus Youngstown State at the Flames Athletic Center.
