Chicago, Ill.- Despite four Flames scoring in double figures, the UIC men's basketball team dropped a 75-74 heartbreaker to Chicago State at the UIC Pavilion on Sunday night.
Justin Bowen and Othyus Jeffers scored 14 points apiece to pace the Flames (3-4).
Kevin Bond matched his career-best with 10 points off the bench while grabbing a career-high five rebounds. Jovan Stefanov also scored 10 while pulling down six boards.
Kevin Jones Jr. hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left for the Cougars (1-2) that proved to be the game-winner.
Chicago State guard Royce Parran led all scorers with 37 points, hitting 5-of-8 from behind the arc.
Jeffers posted a game-high eight rebounds, including five on the offensive side, along with Bowen's seven caroms to give UIC a 37-26 advantage on the boards.
UIC shot nearly 62 percent (16-for-26) from the field to take a 38-28 lead into intermission. Bond and Bowen each pitched in eight points and four rebounds in the opening period.
The Flames' reserves had a big day, outscoring Chicago State's bench 22-8.
Senior guard Rocky Collum made his first appearance of the season, notching a trey in his return from a preseason left MCL injury.
The Flames return to action next Saturday, hosting Ole Miss at the Pavilion at 3:00 p.m.
