Chicago, Ill. - Despite another strong performance from center Nicole Rinaldi, the UIC women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 63-53 decision to visiting Northern Iowa on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion.
Rinaldi, matched up against 6-foot-7 Panther center Cassie Hager, totaled 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots for the Flames, who fell to 2-5 on the year with the loss.
UIC junior LaShonda Grant paced the Flames with 18 points and two steals and senior Krystal Hugelier added ten points on the night.
Panther forward Tara King led Northern Iowa with 24 points and sophomore Traci Ollendieck chipped in 11 points.
The Panthers jumped out early in the first half, hitting four straight buckets to lead the Flames 9-0. At the 10:16 mark, UIC chipped away at UNI's lead while holding the Panthers to zero points.
Two free throw shots with seconds left in the half gave Northern Iowa a 25-16 advantage.
The Flames kicked it up a notch on offense in the second half to allow UIC to slowly gain on the Panthers.
"We settled down and began to play our game and hit shots," Head Coach Lisa Ryckbosch said about the team's performance in the second half. "This allows us to get back into the game."
With 9:10 remaining in regulation, Grant knocked down a three pointer to get UIC within three points.
The Flames were unable to hold the Panthers late in the game on offense and UNI would pick up the 63-53 win.
UIC battles Evansville on the road Sunday, December 11th at 2 pm.
