Indianapolis, Ind.- A sweep of the doubles matches and dominant straight-set wins in four singles matches cured what ailed the UIC women's tennis team, as the Flames picked up a Horizon League road win at Butler by a 5-2 count on Sunday.
UIC (7-10, 4-0 Horizon League) came out of the gates firing on all cylinders with three doubles wins to take the doubles point. Butler (9-9, 4-1 Horizon League) managed to win at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Flames quickly shut down any chance of a Bulldog upset by sweeping the rest of the singles slate.
The win halted a three-match losing streak after the Flames lost a trio of tough matches to defending Big West champion Long Beach State and Conference USA powers DePaul and Louisville.
Melanie Humphrey continued to impress at No. 3 singles, downing Shaden Dowiatt by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Corey Steven was dominant in her 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Kim Jenson, while freshman Grace Gill-Morlis and sophomore Christina Oum, the Flames' youngest players, played like seasoned veterans in taking wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
UIC is back in action this Friday for the Flames' home finale against UW-Green Bay at the UIC Outdoor Courts beginning at 2 p.m.
