Youngstown, Ohio- Saturday's match at Youngstown State wasn't easy for the UIC women's tennis team, but the Flames held on for a close 4-3 Horizon League victory at the YSU Tennis Courts.
UIC went up 1-0 with a sweep of the doubles matches, but YSU came storming back with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
The Flames would hold off the upset bid by the Penguins, though, thanks to convincing 6-1, 6-1 wins by Corey Steven and Grace Gill-Morlis, as well as a clutch comeback win from Melanie Humphrey at No. 4 singles. Humphrey held off Gina Peretti after falling in the first set by a 6-2 count to win the next two by identical 6-3 scores.
UIC improved to 9-10 overall and 6-0 in league play. The Flames handed YSU their first league loss on the season, moving the Penguins to 5-1 on the season.
UIC has now won its last three dual matches.
The Flames wrap up the regular season Sunday at Cleveland State beginning at 9 a.m.
