Volleyball Downs DePaul In Chicago Challenge Opener

Chicago, Ill. - Paced by a career-high 25 kills from junior Ambria Springer, the UIC volleyball team opened play at the 2005 Chicago Challenge by downing host DePaul, 34-32, 24-30, 30-20, 30-28 at the DePaul Athletic Center.

Springer enjoyed a career night on Friday in Lincoln Park, tallying a personal best .579 attack percentage en route to her 25-kill effort. She bested her previous career high of 21 kills set last Friday versus Bowling Green.

Sophomore Katarina Nedeljkovic also added 20 kills and a trio of service aces for the Flames while junior Maura McCarthy tabbed a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. McCarthy has now recorded at least 11 kills in all seven of UIC's matches this season.

Junior Katie Kozak dished out 54 assists for the Flames, who hit .275 as a team in the match.

Mandy Mooreberg totaled 21 kills to lead DePaul.

It was the second straight season that the Flames, who are now 2-5 on the year, opened the Chicago Challenge with a victory over the Blue Demons (1-5).

UIC will continue tournament play on Saturday when they take on Loyola at 12:00 p.m. and Northwestern at 4:30 p.m.
