Detroit, Mich. - The UIC men's basketball team ran into a hot shooting team playing on its home floor on Saturday afternoon as Detroit downed the Flames 76-65 at Calihan Hall.
UIC has now dropped six straight decisions and sits at 8-11 overall and 1-6 in the Horizon League. Detroit moved to 10-11 on the year and 4-3 in the league with the victory.
The host Titans shot 57% from the field versus the Flames, netting 61% (14-for-23) of their shots in the second half. Junior Brandon Cotton led the way for Detroit with a game-high 24 points. Senior forward Chuck Bailey added 15, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor.
Sophomore Othyus Jeffers paced UIC with a career-high tying 18 points while senior Justin Bowen added 15 and sophomore Karl White 11.
The Titans dominated the glass in the contest, out-rebounding the Flames, 31-18, including 12 offensive boards which led to 17 second-chance points. UIC entered the game as the Horizon League's second-best rebounding squad, averaging 38.2 rpg.
Detroit jumped out to an early 10-point lead on Saturday, but watched as Jeffers led UIC back with 11 points in a 16-4 run that staked the Flames to a 23-21 advantage with 8:04 left in the opening half.
The Titans closed the half strong, though, with two late Torvoris Baker baskets helping his team take a 39-32 lead into intermission.
In the second half, seven points would be as close as UIC would get with Detroit's hot shooting not allowing the Flames to make run.
UIC will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, Jan. 25th, when they travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on Wright State at 6:00 p.m. CST.
