Milwaukee, Wis. - Despite cutting a 12-point deficit in the last four minutes of regulation, the UIC women's basketball team was edged by second-place UW-Milwaukee, 55-54. Flames guard Krystal Hugelier netted a three-pointer with 14 seconds on the clock to trail the Panthers by one point.
Netting 17 points, UIC's LaShonda Grant led the Flames, shooting 44 percent from the field. Junior Kelly True chipped in ten points, pulling down five rebounds on the afternoon.
UW-Milwaukee's Nichole Drummond was 6-for-10, shooting 60 percent from the field and Meredith Onson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds in the Panthers win.
UICs guard Chrissy Dizon ignited the Flames with a steal and a bucket following tip-off. UWM's Drummond paced the Panthers, knocking down ten points in ten minutes to give UW-Milwaukee a three-point advantage (16-13) at the 11:08 mark.
The Flames tied it up at 18-18 on a jumper by Jacquay Holmes and a quick layup by True. The Panthers responded by holding UIC for six minutes late in the half to lead 34-26 after the first 20 minutes of play.
Sparking a 6-0 run early in the second half, UIC grabbed a one-point advantage (36-35) with 14:35 remaining. The Panthers turned on the heat with a bucket by Kim Wypiszynski, which led to 12-point led.
With four minutes left in regulation, UIC made one last surge, surprising the Panthers with 11 unanswered points, capped by a trey by Huglelier with 14 seconds remaining. UWM missed from the line, but UIC was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer and the Panthers edged the Flames, 55-54.
UIC will host three straight games at the Pavilion, starting with Wright State on Monday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm. The Flames move to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.
