Evanston, Ill.- The UIC men's tennis team fell in their dual match opener on Sunday, dropping a 7-0 contest to Northwestern at the Combe Tennis Center.
UIC (0-1) was unable to match the host Wildcats (1-0) in the two teams' first match of the year despite some competitive singles bouts, including a spirited three-set thriller between Ivan Kovalev and NU's Christian Tempke.
Kovalev won the first set 7-6 and dropped the second to Tempke by a 7-6 count. In the match tiebreaker, Kovalev rallied from an early 5-3 deficit to take a 6-5 lead before Tempke took the next four points and the match.
Junior Danai Samuriwo and freshman Adrianno Liccardo made their UIC debuts on Sunday.
UIC is back in action this Friday at DePaul beginning at 6:00 p.m.
