UIC Volleyball Captures Fifth Straight Horizon League Victory

Oct. 6, 2006

Box Score

Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball is one win away from tying its 6-0 Horizon League start from last season after topping UW-Green Bay in four games (23-30, 30-24, 30-27, 30-22) at the Flames Athletic Center on Friday night. Despite dropping game one, UIC battled back to capture its fifth straight conference victory.

"We started off a little shaky, but we were able to bounce back," said Head Coach Nancy Mueller. "We made a few adjustments and were able to utilize Ambria Springer in the front."

Leading the Flames with a season-high 24 kills and six blocks, Springer also posted a team-high .400 attack percentage. Juniors Katarina Nedeljkovic and Amanda Kenny each recorded double-doubles in the four-game win over the Phoenix.

UIC posted a 5-1 run to tie it at 10-10, but UW-Green Bay regained the lead for good in game one, posting a .256 attack percentage for the 30-23 win.

Fighting to continue its winning streak, UIC battled back and dominated game two on both sides of the net. Trailing 4-1 early, the Flames turned it up a notch and held the Phoenix to a .062 attack percentage to tie the match at 1-1 (30-24).

"We went on big swings because we were playing good defense, which motivated our hitters," said Mueller.

Leading 9-6 in game three, UIC lost four points due to a serving rotation error to trail UW-Green Bay, 6-5. Despite the loss of points, the Flames didn't allow the call to change the flow of the game. UIC recorded a 6-1 run to grab a 14-9 advantage. UW-Green Bay tied it at 16-16, but the Flames extended their lead, eventually taking game three, 30-27.

Paced by Springer with six kills and four blocks in game four, UIC captured the match victory after handing UW-Green Bay a 30-22 decision.

The Flames tangle with UW-Milwaukee at the Flames Athletic Center on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4:00 p.m.
