Davidson, N.C. - Despite five players scoring in double figures, the UIC men's basketball team was unable to keep pace with a red-hot Davidson squad on Wednesday night as the Wildcats raced to a 100-89 victory at John Belk Arena.
Davidson shot 58 percent from the field in the game, including a blistering 70 percent (21-for-30 FG) clip in the second half. Freshman Stephen Curry paced the Wildcats (3-1) with a game-high 27 points, 23 of which came in the final stanza. He also added nine rebounds and four assists in the win.
Davidson needed to be that hot to stave off a UIC (1-1) offense that was also clicking on Wednesday. The Flames shot 52 percent from the field in the game and connected on 11-of-21 three-point attempts.
Sophomore Josh Mayo led the way for UIC with 26 points, netting 6-of-9 three-point attempts. Junior T.J. Gray gave the Flames a spark off the bench with 16 points (4-of-6 3PT) and four assists. Senior Jovan Stefanov (13 points, 8 rebounds) and juniors Othyus Jeffers (11 points) and Kevin Bond (12 points) were also in double figures for UIC.
The scored was knotted at 39-39 at intermission and Davidson held just a four-point edge, 71-67, with just over nine minutes remaining. But Curry ignited an 11-2 Wildcat run over the next two minutes with six points to give Davidson an 82-69 advantage they would not relinquish.
The Wildcats dominated the boards, holding a 41-22 edge on the glass. The score was tied eight times and saw eight lead changes. Both teams connected on 10-plus three-pointers in the game.
UIC will be back in action on Sunday when they open play in the 2006 Chicago Invitational Challenge by taking on Bradley in Peoria, Ill., at 2 p.m.
