Chicago, Ill.- Four Flames scored in double figures to lead the UIC men's basketball team to an 80-64 victory over Youngstown State at the UIC Pavilion on Saturday.
UIC (4-4, 1-0 Horizon) never trailed in the Horizon League opener for both teams, beginning the game with a 9-0 run and eventually going up 18-3 at one point.
Othyus Jeffers paced the Flames' balanced scoring effort with 16 points. Danijel Zoric pitched in 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting off the bench, while Jovan Stefanov and Josh Mayo each scored 14.
Karl White just missed a double-digit performance of his own with eight points to go along with six rebounds.
The Flames shot 67 percent from the field (18-for-27) in the first half to take a 44-23 advantage into intermission. Zoric and Stefanov each scored 11 points in the opening frame, combining to shoot 9-for-11 during the first 20 minutes.
Mayo, who returned to the court after missing the Flames' last three games with a strained Achilles, showed no signs of rust. The sophomore guard dished out a game-high six assists and hit 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Quin Humphrey led Youngstown State (2-6, 0-1 Horizon) with 18 points.
The Flames outscored the Penguins in the paint by a 32-12 margin.
UIC travels to DeKalb, Ill., to face Northern Illinois on Tuesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m.
